Bride's Checklist: Skin Prep 30 Days Before Your Wedding
Your wedding makeup starts long before the big day. The truth is that the best makeup base is well-cared-for skin. No product in the world can compensate for dehydrated, irritated or uneven-textured skin.
This checklist is the same one I share with every Sthefy Maquilla bride, and it will guide you week by week during the 30 days before your wedding. Follow it and you'll notice a huge difference in how your skin receives makeup, especially if we opt for the armored skin technique.
Important: This is a general guide. If you have a specific dermatological condition (rosacea, severe acne, dermatitis), consult with your dermatologist or with the health services of Peru's Ministry of Health (MINSA) before making changes to your routine. Ideally, you should start seeing your dermatologist 2-3 months before the wedding.
How to prepare your skin week by week?
Establish the foundation: cleansing and evaluation
- Honestly evaluate your skin. Is it oily, dry, combination, sensitive? This determines everything that follows.
- Simplify your routine. If you use 10 products, cut back to the essentials: gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen.
- Start with double cleansing at night: first an oil or balm cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, then a gel or foam cleanser suited to your skin type.
- Incorporate a gentle chemical exfoliant (lactic or mandelic acid at 5-10%) twice a week. No scrubs with granules: they irritate and can cause micro-lesions.
- Start drinking at least 2 liters of water daily. It sounds basic but internal hydration reflects directly on the skin.
Intensive hydration and repair
- Incorporate a hyaluronic acid serum. Apply it on damp skin, morning and night. It hydrates deeply without making skin greasy.
- Add a hydrating mask once a week. Sheet masks with centella asiatica or aloe vera work very well.
- If you have hyperpigmentation (dark spots), you can incorporate a vitamin C serum in the morning (before sunscreen). It helps even out skin tone and add luminosity.
- Care for your lips. Apply lip balm daily, especially before bed, making sure to also cover the corners to keep the entire area hydrated and prevent dryness or cracking.
- Sunscreen every day. Even when the sun isn't out. In Lima, UV radiation is high year-round, as reported by SENAMHI indices, and dark spots can appear when you least expect them.
Refinement and active preparation
- This is the week for your makeup trial. Your skin should be in much better shape than 2 weeks ago.
- Continue with chemical exfoliation twice a week, but no more. Over-exfoliating sensitizes the skin.
- Incorporate an eye cream if you don't already use one. The eye area is where makeup cracks first if it's dehydrated. Look for one with caffeine and hyaluronic acid.
- If you groom your eyebrows, do it this week (not later). Give the skin time to recover.
- Sleep 7-8 hours. Sleep is the best anti-dark-circles treatment there is.
Maintenance and zero risks
- Don't try ANYTHING new. No products, no treatments, no foods you've never been exposed to. An allergic reaction now would be catastrophic.
- Reduce exfoliation to once a week maximum. Your skin should already be soft and luminous.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Serum + moisturizer morning and night without fail.
- Avoid alcohol in excess: it dehydrates the skin and causes facial puffiness the next day.
- Manage stress. Cortisol triggers oil production and can cause acne breakouts. Yoga, meditation, or simply delegate wedding tasks.
What to do the night before the wedding?
This night is crucial. Don't underestimate it.
The morning of your wedding
When you wake up, this is the exact routine I recommend before your makeup artist arrives:
- Wash your face with your regular cleanser and warm water.
- Apply your hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin.
- Apply your usual moisturizer. Don't use a new cream or one heavier than usual.
- Eye contour cream with gentle patting motions.
- Sunscreen only if your makeup artist indicated it. Some armored skin bases already include protection and extra sunscreen can interfere with adhesion.
- DO NOT apply makeup. No foundation, no concealer, nothing. Arrive with clean, prepped skin.
Expert tip: Have a light but nutritious breakfast. Nothing too salty (causes puffiness) or too sweet (energy spikes followed by crashes). Fruit, oatmeal and protein is an ideal combination. And keep drinking water throughout the morning.
What to avoid in the last 2 weeks?
Aggressive facial treatments: deep peels, microneedling, laser. They can cause redness or flaking that takes days to resolve.
Retinol or strong acids: stop retinol and concentrated AHA/BHA at least 5 days before. They sensitize the skin, as warned by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
Self-tanners: results are unpredictable and can affect how the makeup base looks.
Facial waxing in the last 5 days. It irritates and reddens the skin. If needed, use threading or tweezers.
Prolonged sun exposure without protection. A sunburn, even a mild one, ruins weeks of preparation.
What if a pimple appears at the last minute?
It happens. And it's not the end of the world. The worst thing you can do is pop it: that inflames it more and turns it into a mark that's much harder to cover.
If a breakout appears:
- Apply a hydrocolloid patch (pimple patches) overnight. They absorb inflammation without irritating.
- Use a spot treatment with 2% salicylic acid.
- Don't worry: a good armored skin technique covers individual imperfections perfectly. That's what we professionals are for: at Sthefy Maquilla we handle it on the day so it doesn't show in photos.
